A Meal in Japan
It’s been 20 years since I’ve visited Japan. Much to my delight, it is as charming and uniquely it’s own as I remember it. At the moment I’m sitting in a restaurant. I’ve noticed that there is much bowing and nodding before and during this meal, a poetry of movement. My lunch is brought in courses, and each plate is artistically designed, with a leaf or piece of nature placed on it. I could find myself drawn into this culture quite easily. One thing I’m trying to figure out though. I understand that the Japanese frown on rubbing the chopsticks together after pulling them apart. As I dig a splinter out of my teeth I have to wonder which is more acceptable, the rubbing or the picking?
